St. Vincent at the City Museum in St. Louis
The YouTube information on this tour video states that it was filmed “in a magical place in St. Louis,” which is more truth than fiction. The City Museum is definitely one of the more fanciful places you’ll encounter in this, or any, city, and this video does a good job of capturing the feeling of awe the place inspires even in full-grown adults.
St. Vincent’s show at the Firebird last Thursday absolutely exceeded my expectations on every possible level: respectful and to-capacity crowd, crystal clear sound, and stunning musicality. I was kind of a “meh” fan of St. Vincent before, having only heard her first album and finding in pleasant, but almost too polished and too precious for me to take too seriously (I blame a ridiculously latent punk ethos for demanding my music be somewhat imperfect and human). But watching these highly accomplished (and presumably conservatory-trained) musicians dispatch of the setlist with ruthless precision and heart, I was speechless. In a roundabout way, I realized that a lot of the bands I obsess over are total amateurs in comparison. I’m still processing the event.
